Above
Pål Vigeland’s architectural video installation Above, located in the museum’s courtyard, refers to the thorny and seemingly irresolvable conflict in the Middle East. The material for the installation was collected from the old town in Hebron, one of the largest and oldest cities on the West Bank in Palestine. Vigeland is drawing attention to a real-life practice whereby Israeli settlers try to drive out and humiliate Arab Muslims by throwing garbage and other objects out from the upper-storey windows of tenement houses down onto the heads of passers-by. To protect themselves from such demonstrative and unpleasant attacks, the Arab residents have taken to hanging up netting over the walkways. The netting thus represents both a physical and a symbolic division between those above the netting and those below it. Above is an interactive installation where spectators are invited to position themselves both above and below the netting. The piece serves not only to document a brutal reality and a hierarchic, oppressive society, but also to highlight how people in general relate to one another through power games and repressive mechanisms. |
